Zacchaeus said to Jesus: “Look, Sir, I am going to give half my property to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody I will pay him back four times the amount.”
Occasionally there may be a wealthy person in our society who does likewise. Wouldn’t it be a marvellous world if more wealthy people had a similar attitude?
I want to mention here that you can now find “The Crisis of Civilisation” among my pages at the top. You may remember that I reblogged it from The Guardian.

I've lived in Australia since 1959 together with my husband Peter. We have four children, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. I started blogging because I wanted to publish some of my childhood memories. I am blogging now also some of my other memories. I like to publish some photos too as well as a little bit of a diary from the present time. Occasionally I publish a story with a bit of fiction in it. Peter, my husband, is publishing some of his stories under berlioz1935.wordpress.com

The story of Zacchaeus was one of my favorites as a child complete with a Sunday School song that celebrated his climbing up into a tree to see Jesus. I can’t think of any current day examples of this kind of generosity. Very interesting, Uta!
Thanks for this comment Debra. It’s interesting that you did get to know this story as a child already and can remember it! I never went to anything like a Sunday School.
I always liked the story of Zacchaeus – too short to see, so he climbed a tree – but it wasn’t until I had acquired a certain amount of material comfort that I began to appreciate just how much he gave away. Definitely an example to hold up and tr to follow.
I have been a Catholic for well over thirty years now and gone to Mass fairly regularly. I think this story would have been read to us once every three years. I could remember that this someone did climb a tree to see Jesus. Somehow it did not stick in my memory how much he wanted to give away! We would have to ask an economist, dear Cat, to find out what would happen if everyone who considers himself wealthy would follow his example. – – –
Are you wealthy, Cat? I think in worldwide terms I am wealthy. 🙂 However in my own land I am far from wealthy!
Is there any kind of justice in the distribution of wealth all over the planet? I don’t think so. Has everyone who is very wealthy really earned that much wealth? I don’t think so either. I think the difference between poor and rich has in our time become even more pronounced than in the time of Jesus. Where does this lead to? How is a change in thinking possible?
Uta, I’m far from wealthy in western terms, but I am content with what I have so that makes me rich! I think this may inspire a blog post!
You’d like to write a post about it, Cat? Lovely! I am a bit like you, As I said in my own country I am far from wealthy, still I am content with what is given to me. 🙂
