Eight decades. Three generations. Thousands of lives.
The Harvard Study of Adult Development is an extraordinary scientific endeavor that began in 1938 and is still going strong (Waldinger is the fourth director, and Schulz its associate director). For over eight decades, the study has tracked the same individuals and their families, asking thousands of questions and taking hundreds of measurements—from brain scans to blood work—with the goal of discovering what really makes for a good life.
Through all the years of studying these lives, strong relationships stand out for their impact on physical health, mental health, and longevity. Waldinger and Schulz boil it down simply:
“Good relationships keep us happier and healthier. Period.”

Yes, a long-term, secure relationship allows oneself to “settle into” that rythmn of lifestyle conducive to good health, wealth and work/career relationships…not to mention the wonderful benefits of the children if they come along…the confidence of knowing you are coming home from a day’s work to a comfortable homelife is one of the most wonderful leelings one can have in this life…
But…at the same time, the “inbuilt inquisitiveness” of the human being demands we think, at least, if not act on those internal unease feeliongs of “want”…even in the most secure relationship, there is that wondering, however slight, about the more adventurious side of life…Through visual media, we are tempted everyday to explore the exciting offered world “outside”….so it is a continual push-pull of homelife vs. adventurous life.
Such important, good advice! Such truth!
Thank you for sharing all of this, SweetUta!
How are you doing?
Love and (((HUGS))) for you!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Yes, I too believe that all of us need some good relationships. Blogger relationships can sometimes be rather important too.
I am doing fine, thank you, Carolyn.
I am very happy that I can still look after myself, and that I can get support when I need it.
Thank you, dear Carolyn, and HUGS from me too!
