Travelling around in the Illawarra

Today is already the first of May. There are still some more pictures of last month I wish to publish. Right now I am going to publish some photos we took on Tuesday, the 9th of April, the day when we picked up our rental car in Wollongong. At Austinmer Beach we stopped for a cup of coffee.

This young woman had come with a whole lot of other people from a tourist bus that stopped near the beach just for a few minutes. This friendly young woman asked Peter to take some pictures of her. And she also wanted to be photographed together with me!

After this interlude we drove further up north. There is this little beach that we can always see from the train on the way to Sydney. We stopped briefly near that little beach and then we went up to Bald Hill where we could see this little beach from the top and we could also see the Sea Cliff Bridge.

On that Tuesday we also went from Bald Hill up the escarpment to Bulli Lookout where we had something to eat at the Cliffhanger Cafe.
All these places are in our area. We were back home in the afternoon and started getting ready for our big trip away from home. We were away from home for ten nights (eleven days). Peter saw to it that we could have a rest after every two hours of driving. This rental car was pretty new and more powerful than our small thirteen year old car that Peter usually drives. I was glad that we hired this rental car for our big trip. It made for much better longer distance driving. I am afraid we took an awful lot of pictures during our trip. So there are still some more to come in my next posts!

  1. I am always glad when we can travel a bit around in our area. There are really some magnificent places in our area.
For ten days out of the twelve days, while we had the rental car, we were away from home. It took us two days to reach Mildura. There was one overnight stop on the way to Mildura. In Mildura we had two overnight stops. On day five, a Saturday, we took only about seven hours to reach Melbourne. In Melbourne we stayed for seven nights at our son’s place. While we were there, Peter let our son drive the car. Living in Melbourne he’s much more familiar with the area. And it gave Peter a rest from driving. Then on the eleventh day we managed to drive all the way back from Melbourne to Dapto. This took eleven hours! We managed to be back home before it got too dark. And on day twelve, which was a Sunday, we returned the car in Wollongong.
Peter is a good driver. With a stop every two hours he managed the tour quite well. He’s all right driving as long as there’s daylight. But Peter doesn’t do any night driving anymore.
I was glad we had the rental car which was pretty new and a bit more powerful than our little thirteen year old car. With long distance driving this makes a difference.
Thanks for your interest, Cath. 🙂

    1. I guess you’re referring to the sign in the IL PRANZO coffee lounge up in Moss Vale? The other sign ‘COLD DRINKS HERE’ would probably be this old too!

    1. Imagine IT, all this is practically in front of our door, meaning we have to travel only short distances to view all this! I am always glad when we take the initiative to travel a bit.But to travel for more than 2000 km as we did thereafter, this is something else. We couldn’t possibly do this on a regular basis! It really was an experience to travel through the outback of NSW for never before had I travelled all the way to Mildura and from there on to Melbourne.
