Uta’s Diary, 5th of Sep 2016

Yesterday, on the first Sunday of September,  it was Fathers’ Day in Australia. Our daughter Monika had booked a table for lunch at the German Club. The place was totally booked out. I was told, Fathers’ Day and Mothers’ Day were the two most busy lunches. Even for Christmas they do not have that many bookings because for Christmas most families like to celebrate at home.

At the German Club there is now a cafe section. After our rich German lunch we placed ourselves in that cafe section for coffee and cake. Mark, Monika’s partner, gave Peter a special bottle of beer. While Peter was hugging this bottle, Monika took this picture of Peter and me.

We have been invited for next Sunday afternoon to Mark’s and Monika’s place for coffee and cake. It is going to be Natasha’s 25th birthday and Monika’s whole family will be there. We’re looking forward to that.

Matthew has been visiting our daughter Caroline in Darwin over the weekend. In a few weeks Caroline is going to visit us again. Caroline may be working in Darwin till February of next year.  There are affordable flights available between Sydney and Darwin. Caroline and Matthew do make good use of these!  I wonder, when we can see our son Martin, who lives in Melbourne. He was with us in Berlin where we had a really good time with him. We have not seen him since we returned from overseas; that was a couple of months ago. How time flies!

A picture that Peter took on Fathers Day 2014

Peter took this picture on the morning of Sunday, the 7th of September 2014. This was Fathers Day in Australia. There were blue irises as well as a bottle of Peter’s favourite port-wine. The cake made with ground almonds was for the afternoon. Monika arrived in the afternoon with sons and daughters as well as two year old grandson Lucas. Monika brought gifts along for her Papa: A lovely bottle of wine, chocolates, scratchies and a card.

Son Martin rang from Melbourne at night-time. This call was diverted to our interim mobile phone that Telstra had sent us to use while our landline phone was out of order. This mobile phone had no ringing sound. Instead a computerised female voice always announced to us when we had a phone call.

Caroline and Matthew had been going away for a few days to attend the wedding of their friends. They are back now and we are going to see them on Sunday. They probably made a lot of pictures and are going to tell us a lot about their trip.

Peter thought he had a lovely Fathers Day last Sunday. We are looking forward to seeing Caroline and Matthew very soon.

Lucas likes the cake very much and just wants more and more. When there’s no more cake left on Monika’s plate he moves over to his Mum who gives him more cake from her plate. Peter tells Lucas to remember that his Opi baked the cake! Opi is a cake lover too. So Lucas has this in common with his Great-Granddad.

Peter loves baking cakes. This cake was made with almond-meal and semolina and lots of eggs. The filling was fresh cream (with some chocolate spread in the cream) and also some apricot jam. As topping Peter used dark cooking chocolate.

Lucas is now 13 months and a bit and loves to walk. He walked tirelessly round and round in our place, from the dining room to the kitchen, to the hallway and back to the dining room. While he was eating his cake he made noises of pleasure that sounded like singing.
