So far it has been another rainy weekend (“ein verregnetes Wochenende!”). It’s raining ‘Cats and Dogs’ so to speak. And this after it had been quite wet for most of last week. Well, maybe tomorrow, Sunday, is going to be a bit better. π

Auntie, Sister. Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Mother and Wife of German Descent I've lived in Australia since 1959 together with my husband Peter. We have four children, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. I started blogging because I wanted to publish some of my childhood memories. I am blogging now also some of my other memories. I like to publish some photos too as well as a little bit of a diary from the present time. Occasionally I publish a story with a bit of fiction in it. Yea, I hope so too, Ian. And I hope your nights will soon get a bit warmer!
Cheers, Auntyuta. π
Es regnet Katze und Huende?
Good question, Linda. This must be an Australian expression for ‘it’s pouring a real lot’. Sorry, I don’t think Germans have a similar expression. ‘Katzen und Hunde’ ? No, Germans would be very surprised to hear it was raining ‘Katzen und Hunde’!
Fun. I wondered. And of course, I didn’t even spell the words right. π
It’s an expression in the US, too. So I figure it’s an English (UK) idiom as it’s shared by Americans and Aussies.
Then, again, it could have been exported to you during WWII when a lot of Americans were there; my Dad included. It was his favorite place during the war… but then again, he was also based in New Guinea and carious South Pacific islands much of the time. He got R and R in Australia mostly in Queensland and the Northern Territory. His favorite song was “Waltzing Matilda”. He was a young Lieutenant bomber pilot then, so I figure he got around a bit. (I might have relatives there as a result! LOL)
Sounds like your Dad did get around a bit, “Waltzing Matilda” is one of my favourite songs too. Thanks, Devon, for the comment. In Sydney today the rain at times came down very heavily again! Maybe it was a bit more than cats and dogs even. π
