Reflections: UN Forum On The Culture Of Peace

13 Sep

I reckon to think about PEACE is most important. And not just think about it but actually doing something about it to keep the peace. Why can’t we all have governments who only want peace and not war?

Mirth and Motivation

“Peace is more than the end of armed conflict. Peace is a mode of behavior.” It is a “deep rooted commitment to the principles of liberty, justice, equality and solidarity among all.”  Yamoussoukro Declaration

Remarks: By H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations at the Opening session of the High-level Forum on the Culture of Peace.

The Culture Of Peace: 25 years ago, in Yamoussoukro, capital of Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), the concept of a global culture of peace was initiated by the UNESCO-supported International Congress of Peace. UNESCO declared that peace must be “nurtured through the dignity, rights and capacities of every man and woman.” Today, at the UN High-level Forum on the Culture…

Robyn, you say: The human race will only survive when it finds a way to peace. Until then, each day is a risk.
I think it starts with tolerance, justice and equality at home within our families and all our neighbours. At the moment I see globally far too much warmongering.
I hope that one day we will see the majority of global leaders advocating the principals of peace and establishing their policies and their thinking accordingly. Only then are we going to be on the way to global peace. So far mankind accumulated too many sophisticated weapons of war. These are a threat for the survival of mankind,
But we also witness desperate actions by people with rather primitive weapons who do not care whether they live or die. They think it is the right thing to do to kill as many people as possible. I fear the killing will get much worse before we can hope for a more peaceful global environment.

Sadly, Uta, I agree with you.

“Greed is the root of all evil” we were told as kids. The older I get, the truer it seems.

Robyn, what you say about greed seems to be very true. I feel I would like to write a bit about this subject, what my thoughts about this are. Thank you for commenting on this. Yes, I might come back to this subject. At the moment we are off to Sydney to have a picnic lunch at Centennial Park with family.
Have a great Sunday, Robyn, with maybe a bit of sunshine! 🙂

      Uta 🙂

A good post, The more people demand piece and spread the word of peace, the more (one hopes) peace will come about. Thank you Uta.

Yes, Gerard, it is great if posts like this one by Eliz (Mirth and Motivation) are going to be read by as many people as possible.

A very noble sentiment. However I’m skeptical about our ability to achieve peace without first getting rid of the bankers and corporate CEOs that are making immense profits out of this permanent War on Terror – and the politicians who do their bidding.

Thank you for commenting, Stuart. Maybe everyone in our society who receives much, much more than what they need for a comfortable living should aim at helping to get other people out of poverty. The difference between rich and poor is getting greater, and greater rather than diminishing. This leads to warlike situations. If we let every person on this earth have access to some land and or jobs as well as clean water and unpolluted air, I think then we can have peace.
