Rostock-Lichtenhagen riots
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lichtenhagen in relation to Rostock
“From August 22 to August 24, 1992 violent xenophobic riots took place in the Lichtenhagen district of Rostock, Germany; these were the worst mob attacks against migrants in postwar Germany. Even though stones and petrol bombs were thrown at an apartment block where asylum seekers lived, no one was killed. At the height of the riots, several hundred militant right-wing extremists were involved, and about 3,000 neighbourhood onlookers stood by, applauding them . . . . . . .”

Diary, August 2017

Here are Martin and Peter soon after our arrival at Sussex Inlet on Friday, the 18th of August 2017:

We were the first to arrive at our ‘camp’ at Sussex Inlet. Four more cars with ten more family members turned up during the late afternoon. We all stayed until the following Sunday and had a very good time. These family gatherings are very stimulating. I would not want to miss them.

Amid regional tensions, South Koreans lack awareness on bomb shelters

ReutersNews Corp Australia Network

“SOUTH Korean President Moon Jae-in has called on his US allies to help prevent a war, amid worsening tension over the North’s nuclear threat.

Mr Moon told the visiting top US military official that there must be a diplomatic solution to the crisis.

Gen Joseph Dunford said the US priority was diplomacy but added that military options were being prepared should sanctions against the North fail.”

The North on Monday said any war could “only be turned into a nuclear war”.

Also on Monday, China’s commerce ministry issued an order banning a slew of imports from North Korea, in line with additional UN sanctions that were announced earlier this month.

Mr Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is visiting South Korea, Japan and China after a week in which Donald Trump declared the US military “locked and loaded” and said he was ready to unleash “fire and fury” if North Korea continued to threaten the US. ”

“North Korea, meanwhile, has threatened to lob four intermediate-range missiles into the waters near Guam, a tiny US territory about 3,200 kilometres (2,000 miles) from Pyongyang, North Korea’s capital.

This would be a deeply provocative act from the US perspective, and there has been widespread debate about whether Washington would try to shoot the missiles down if they’re fired.

The US-North Korea impasse, which has simmered since the end of the Korean War in 1953, has grown more tense in recent months over worries that the North’s nuclear weapons program is nearing the ability to target the US mainland.”

Photography with aesthetics close to Gothic (black and white), showing a woman dressed in that style

The goth subculture adopts dark fashion elements such as black clothing, dyed black hair, dark eyeliner, black fingernails and black period-styled clothing [1] and a focus on gothic rock and a range of other music genres. The goth subculture, began in England during the early 1980s where it was developed from the gothic rock scene, itself an offshoot of the post-punk genre. Notable post-punk groups that presaged that genre include Siouxsie and the BansheesJoy Division and Bauhaus. The goth subculture has survived much longer than others of the same era, and has continued to diversify and spread throughout the world. Its imagery and cultural proclivities indicate influences from the 19th century Gothic literature and gothic horror films.

The goth subculture has associated tastes in music, aesthetics, and fashion. The music of the goth subculture encompasses a number of different styles, including gothic rockindustrialdeathrockpost-punkdarkwaveethereal wave and neoclassical. Styles of dress within the subculture range from deathrockpunk and Victorianstyles, or combinations of the above, most often with dark attire (often black), pale face makeup and black hair. The scene continues to draw interest from a large audience decades after its emergence. A number of large annual festivals are held in Europe, notably Wave-Gotik treffen.” . . . .  [2]

Nearly two months ago I mentioned the ‘Nato Exercises in Romania’ in a  post. Today I had another look at some of the YouTube videos. It is hard to describe what I feel when I watch these videos. After World War Two I grew up thinking that it was possible that mankind should live in peace. That World Wars could be prevented because people did not like these wars. People wanted to live in peace, didn’t they? What do people want now, really?

“Maria Baptist was born in 1971 in East Berlin in a very musical family. Her grandfather was an orchestra musician and composer, her father himself is a pianist. Maria discovered very early her fascination for music and at the age of six she began playing the piano. At the age of eleven she composed her first pieces. Maria developed her desire to become a classical concert pianist. At the age of fifteen Maria listened to recordings of Dave Brubeck and Keith Jarrett and discovered for the first time the world of jazz and improvisation. Impressed by the musical expression, Maria felt that she had to continue on this path. She began studying piano at the music university in Berlin and won her first international piano competitions on improvisation. During this period, the Berlin Wall fell, which meant a great personal change in Maria’s life. She took the opportunity to move to New York. Here Maria experienced the freedom, space and magic, which opened up whole new musical worlds to her. Maria’s artistic work was significantly influenced and inspired by the tremendous creativity, energy, living will, the strength and melancholy of the metropolis. . . . .  ”
