Norman Reef, Great Barrier Reef

Norman Reef is only a few miles from the deep continental shelf. One of the larger dive operators in the area has a pontoon and a submersible stationed permanently on the reef which can be visited by hundreds of people each day. The reef structure here is varied and interesting for both snorkelers and scuba divers, it’s very healthy and home to a huge variety of marine life. Image collect Catlin Seaview Survey.

An independent Thinker Review from Sunday, 06 November 2005

“They Thought They Were Free” – Thom Hartmann’s Independent Thinker Review

Written by

Thom Hartmann’s “Independent Thinker” Book of the Month Review

“They Thought They Were Free” is an intensely personal book for me. Although I was born after Hitler was five years dead, the horrible dance between fascism and democracy has fascinated me since childhood. And, through a series of odd coincidences, my adult life has been heavily intertwined with those of both Nazis and the victims of Hitler’s Nazis.

. . . . . . .

As Mayer so movingly narrates, the experience of 20th century Europe demonstrates that those abusing power must be confronted with equally vigorous power.

In the 1930s, Germans who believed in republican democracy were overwhelmed before they realized how completely their civil liberties and national institutions had been seized.

We must not allow it to happen in our nation. Read “They Thought They Were Free” and awaken as many as you can.

About

Milton Sanford Mayer

An American Jew of German ancestry, and a brilliant reporter, Mayer went to Germany 7 years after Hitler’s fall and befriended 10 Nazis. This book is, in large part, his story of that experience. Intertwined through it — written in 1955 — are repeated overt and subtle warnings to future generations of Americans — us, today.

‘The rhetoric of hard work conflicts with the reality on the ground.’

Editor’s Note: The following article is adapted from Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis (Harper).

“Growing up in Middletown, Ohio, we had no sense that failing to achieve higher education would bring shame or any other consequences. The message wasn’t explicit; teachers didn’t tell us that we were too stupid or poor to make it. Nevertheless, it was all around us, like the air we breathed: No one in our families had gone to college; older friends and siblings were perfectly content to stay in Middletown, regardless of their career prospects; we knew no one at a prestigious out-of-state school; and everyone knew at least one young adult who was underemployed or didn’t have a job at all. . . .  ”

We like to have lemon/ginger tea in the morning.  A few days ago we went outside for our morning tea. The pot in the middle of the above picture is Peter’s pot for his drinking water. He has to drink each day a minimum of two litres of water to cleanse his bladder!

The skin on the peach came off easily. This peach was deliciously juicy.

It was not a very hot morning. So I stayed a bit longer outside after Peter had gone back inside, putting my feet up!

Some hot chillies did survive a number of very hot days quite well.

We had a lot of tomatoes growing. We very much liked the taste of them. Now there are only a few left.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Last Sunday afternoon we listened to some beautiful music:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It was the Europa Konzert der Berliner Philharmoniker from the year 2000. Among other things they played Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. Wonderful!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

On that Sunday we had also gone out for lunch. We went to have lunch in the Illawarra Yacht Club at Lake Heights.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The parking area was quite full but we found a good spot.

There was a bit of a misty view across the lake.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
We had a look at the MENU.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Peter chose Fettuccini with some ham and I had Fettuccini with lots of olive oil, tomatoes, asparagus, feta cheese and pine nuts. Tasted very good. However the servings were very large servings: All together a bit too much for us!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
In this box Peter keeps 25 Europa Konzerte by the Berlin Philharmonikers!

We also listened to another concert  from the year 2001 from Istanbul:

This was a live concert from the Hagia Irene Church in Istanbul.

On another day,  Peter and I had a few games of Rummy Cub, and while playing, we listened to some CDs with MUSIC BY GLENN MILLER !

At RUBY’S MOUNT KEMBLA RESTAURANT

I reblog here my own post from 4th of December 2016. So far not many people seem to have looked at it. It was so interesting to see ‘degustation’ servings on our plates. Very artistic and very cute!

auntyuta's avatarAuntyUta

Today,  Sunday, Caroline and Matthew invited us to a five course Degustation Lnnch, degustation meaning taking a small amount into the mouth to taste the quality of the food.

Our five course meal was excellent. We sat there for hours enjoying one course after another. We took pictures of most of the courses. As an entree we had tiny cups of delicious soup, also some warm bread and butter. The bread seemed to be damper and was probably baked on the premises. The restaurant is up in the mountains. It was warm, but not too hot. All the rooms were open to the outdoors. No air-conditioning needed! I thought this was great. We felt as though we were being in the country. We were surrounded by lots of things from country life in the past. And we were only a fifteen minute drive away from home! Quite amazing really. The service…

Layers of the legend

The Queen of Sheba – an exotic and mysterious woman of power – is immortalised in the world’s great religious works, among them the Hebrew Bible and the Muslim Koran. She also appears in Turkish and Persian painting, in Kabbalistic treatises, and in medieval Christian mystical works, where she is viewed as the embodiment of Divine Wisdom and a foreteller of the cult of the Holy Cross. In Africa and Arabia her tale is still told to this day and, indeed, her tale has been told and retold in many lands for nearly 3,000 years.

The sources and history of the legend, however, are elusive.

Hollywood, too, has fallen under her spell, releasing its own polished epic version of her story in the glossy Solomon and Sheba of 1959. The sources and history of the legend, however, are elusive. No other popular heroine is so celebrated but so puzzling.

Trying to ascertain who she may really have been is an arduous task, and a question soon arises. Why, if so little is known about her, has she become such an important figure? The tales of Solomon and the Queen of Sheba have, after all, even provided the founding myths for the modern states of Israel and Ethiopia.

Orange Sky Laundry

There was a news item this morning about Orange Sky Laundry and I googled the following to find out more about what they do. Yes, helping your brothers and sisters, that what is all about.

http://www.orangeskylaundry.com.au/what-we-do

Why Orange Sky?
The song, Orange Sky by Alexi Murdoch has been a major inspiration behind this project. “In your love, my salvation lies” and “I had a dream I stood beneath an orange sky, with my brother standing by” are lyrics from the song. The entire message of the song is about helping your brothers and sisters. These values are imperative to us and central to our project.

What will people do while their
clothes are being washed?
Orange Sky Laundry will be partnering with a number of food vans in order to get clothes washed and returned as quickly as possible. The washing will be done while meals are being cooked and eaten.

What will people wear while their
clothes are being washed?
During the trial we will be washing all other possessions, i.e. blankets and other sets of clothes. There are plans for further developments in this area later!

How many people’s clothes
can you wash?
At Orange Sky Laundry we have two 10kg washers and dryers that allow us to get 20kg of clean washing out every hour.
Additionally, linen bags and an efficient colour co-ordination system will allow us to wash multiple people’s clothes at
once and keep their belongings together.

What about power and water?
Initially, the van will tow a generator for power. Water will be sourced from the parks/local businesses depending on the area. Following the trial, the appropriate water and power connections will be in place and the final schedule will be published. Our new vans now also include oboard clean and grey water storage, along with a power generator.

Who is doing the washing?
The washers are automatically fed so there are no powders or toxic chemicals. Therefore our volunteers simply load the linen bags and once clean, return the belongings to their owner.

When and where will you be operating?
We aim to be on the streets of Brisbane at least 5 days a week testing different locations and different crowds of people from Brisbane to Ipswich. The hours will be mirroring the local food services but will usually be between 6-11am.

How do you set this up in a public place?
Very similarly to the local food services, the van will be run at well known, yet discreet locations across South East Queensland.

How can I help?
Your support is greatly accepted and appreciated for our project. You can donate and/or sign up to our ever growing volunteers list! Also, continually growing awareness of our organisation is greatly appreciated so please find us on social media! If you see the van driving around come and say hi and talk to our fantastic team!

Our Walk on Friday, 20th of January 2017

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
A Walk in Toe-Shoes!

It had been a long time since we ventured for a walk in our toe-shoes. But we found out that they still did fit us all right. Surprise, surprise,  on that Friday morning we actually got ready quite early for our little walk. We thought it would be important to walk before it got too hot!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Actually, some clouds were to be seen already.

Would it perhaps rain later on? Anyhow, we started walking across the grass in our toe-shoes. Our destination was the little playground in Lakelands Park. We had not been there for a while.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Of course, the playground was still there!

Then it was my turn on the swing. What fun for an 82 year old!

On the way home we ended up among some trees. I published the tree pictures here:

“Ich bin hier!”

“Ich bin hier!” – I’m here! – Peter called out. I had just been shooting a few pictures. Camera ready, I took a snapshot of sneaky Peter. He had actually sneaked up on me. I hadn’t noticed at all that he was that close to me!

These pictures were taken during our early walk on Friday, the 20th of January 2017.
